Abberton Reservoir

Abberton Reservoir is a large freshwater storage lake near Colchester with shallow banks and wooded shorelines that create varied habitats. The water body supports diverse plant and animal life across its expansive surface.

The dam was constructed during the 1930s as a major water management project for the region. The creation of this artificial lake transformed the landscape and became increasingly important for both water supply and nature conservation.

The Nature Discovery Centre offers bird watching hides and walking trails at the site with basic amenities like toilets and a shop. Visiting works best on foot using marked paths that link viewing points around the water.

The water supports a distinctive colony of cormorants that nest unusually in trees rather than on cliffs or rocky ground. This bird population has established itself here over several decades and represents a rare occurrence in Britain.
