Abbey House, Barrow-in-Furness
Abbey House, Barrow-in-Furness, English country house in Barrow-in-Furness, England
Abbey House features a Neo-Elizabethan H-plan design with large windows, detailed stonework, and fourteen acres of landscaped gardens surrounding the property.
Constructed between 1910 and 1914, the mansion was initially built as a guest house for Vickers Ltd and residence for Managing Director Sir James McKechnie.
The mansion demonstrates Sir Edwin Lutyens' architectural evolution, incorporating Tudor elements that influenced his subsequent work at Castle Drogo.
The four-star hotel provides guided tours, event facilities, and houses Oscars restaurant, which serves meals to both overnight guests and external visitors.
Following its 1951 conversion to an elderly care home and subsequent neglect, the Grade II* listed building underwent restoration in 1984 to become a hotel.
