Abbey House, Barrow-in-Furness

Abbey House is an imposing country house in Barrow-in-Furness with a Neo-Elizabethan H-shaped design featuring tall windows and intricate stonework throughout. The building sits within fourteen acres of landscaped grounds that define its expansive setting.

The mansion was constructed between 1910 and 1914 as a guest house and private residence for a senior industrial executive. In 1951 it was converted to an elderly care facility, leading to its gradual decline over the following decades.

The house reflects the grandeur of early 20th-century industrial wealth through its design and furnishings. The interior spaces still display elements of the original decoration that showcase the refined tastes of its first owners.

The building operates as a four-star hotel that offers guided tours of its rooms and serves as a venue for events. Visitors can also dine at the on-site restaurant, which welcomes both hotel guests and external diners.

The building underwent a complete restoration in 1984 after years of decay, transforming it into a hotel and saving it from demolition. This extensive renewal made it possible to recover much of its original architecture and landscape design.
