Abbey Park, Grade II listed park and garden in Leicester, England
Abbey Park is a large green space in Leicester divided by the River Soar into two distinct areas. The western section holds the visible remains of the former monastery, while the eastern side features laid-out gardens, open lawns, and mature trees.
The site was originally a Benedictine monastery that played an important religious and economic role in the region during the Middle Ages. In the 1800s it became a park, transforming marshy flood-prone land into a public space for the growing city.
The park's name comes from the medieval monastery that once stood here, with ruins still visible as stone foundations and walls throughout the grounds. These remains help visitors understand how important this religious community was to the local area long ago.
The park is easy to navigate on foot with well-maintained paths leading through different areas and activities are clearly separated. There are benches for resting, toilets available, and plenty of open space to move around freely, especially on warmer days.
Researchers from Leicester University regularly conduct excavations on the grounds to learn more about the medieval monastery. Visitors can sometimes observe this ongoing work and gain insight into how archaeologists uncover the past.
