Airthrey Castle, Country house at Bridge of Allan, Scotland
Airthrey Castle is a stone country house designed by architect Robert Adam in 1791 and situated within the University of Stirling's expansive parkland grounds. The building sits above the Forth valley and now serves as the university's main administrative and international study center.
Robert Adam designed this country house in 1791 for evangelist Robert Haldane, whose family had owned the estate since 1759. Recognized as a Category B listed building, it has remained a central structure through its various roles on what became the university campus.
The building began as a private residence and later served as a maternity hospital during World War II before joining the university. Visitors can sense how these different uses have shaped the character of the place over time.
The grounds are open for visitors to walk through, though interior access to the building may be restricted. Wear sturdy shoes as the terrain is hilly and can become slippery, especially in wet weather.
Two standing stones on the grounds may mark where King Kenneth I defeated the Picts and united Scotland around 839. These ancient markers are easy to miss but connect the site to a pivotal moment in Scottish history.
