Aberuchill Castle, Category A listed tower house in Comrie, Scotland.
Aberuchill Castle is a three-story tower house in Comrie, Perthshire, with walls approximately 1.2 meters thick and angle turrets positioned at three corners. Nineteenth-century extensions were added to the original structure, expanding its overall size and functionality.
Colin Campbell constructed the castle in 1602, and it remained in family hands until 1772 when it was sold to James Drummond of Strageath. This change of ownership marked a significant shift in the building's history after nearly 170 years under Campbell control.
The castle grounds feature an early twentieth-century rock garden running along the Aberuchill Burn and a walled garden displaying Himalayan plant varieties. These gardens reflect the botanical interests of past residents who brought exotic specimens to this Scottish location.
The castle sits west of Comrie in the Aberuchill Hills, overlooking a valley with surrounding woodland and parkland. Visiting on foot allows you to explore the grounds and take in views of the landscape from various angles around the structure.
The property was acquired in 2005 by Russian steel magnate Vladimir Lisin along with a substantial land estate. This purchase represented a significant modern chapter in the castle's ownership history and brought international attention to the location.
