4C Array, Radio telescope at Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory, Cambridge, England
The 4C Array is a radio telescope at the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory near Cambridge. This instrument uses a cylindrical paraboloid design to collect radio waves from space.
The instrument was built in 1958 and was the first large aperture synthesis telescope at this location. Its development came after the observatory relocated to this site in 1957.
The telescope enabled scientists to compile the 4C catalogue, documenting nearly 5000 radio sources and advancing understanding of galaxy populations.
The location is near Cambridge and sits within a larger observatory complex containing several instruments. Keep in mind that the site is on a research facility where access may be limited or require advance planning.
The array was part of an extensive observation program that contributed to a catalog documenting nearly 5000 radio sources. This work helped astronomers understand how galaxies are distributed across the universe.
