Angel & Greyhound Meadow, Oxford, Riverside park near Magdalen Bridge, Oxford, United Kingdom
Angel & Greyhound Meadow is a riverside green space of about 4.4 hectares stretching on both sides of the River Cherwell with natural grassland and scattered trees. The terrain is flat, and the water defines the character of the place with open fields running alongside.
The meadow took its name from two former coaching inns on High Street that once kept horses on this land for travelers passing through. This connection to Oxford's transportation past remains part of what defines the place.
The green space connects to Oxford's past through a neighboring pub that took the meadow's name, and you can feel this local tie when you visit the area.
The meadow sits about 1.4 kilometers from central Oxford and is reached via Bath Street bridge, which has a vehicle width restriction to note. Walking from the city center or cycling along local routes works well to reach this riverside area.
The meadow becomes a natural flood plain during February and March when the River Cherwell spreads across the land, and this seasonal transformation is part of the land's ecological rhythm. The water returns to its normal course after this period, leaving the grassland renewed.
