Anglo Scotian Mills, Victorian textile mill in Beeston, United Kingdom
Anglo Scotian Mills is a four-story building in Beeston featuring castellated entrances, slate-covered hip roofs, and traditional English bond brickwork throughout. It now houses 104 residential apartments and commercial units following its renovation completion in 2007.
The building was constructed in 1892 following two major fires that destroyed earlier production facilities on the site. It produced lace and Scottish knitwear under Francis Wilkinson's management until manufacturing operations closed in 2000.
The building is known locally as 'The Barracks' because its industrial design features fortress-like entrances at the front and rear that resemble a military structure. This nickname reflects how the community perceived the building's strong, imposing form.
The site is accessible for walking around, allowing visitors to view the Victorian architecture from the exterior and surrounding areas. The castellated entrances and brick design can be appreciated from the outside without entering the private residential spaces.
A modern glass staircase was incorporated during the renovation, offering views across Beeston while respecting the building's original Victorian features. This blend of old and new creates an unexpected contrast within the restored spaces.
