Annesley Old Church, Medieval church ruins in Annesley, England
Annesley Old Church is a medieval church structure in England that has gradually lost its roof and interior furnishings over time. The building includes a west tower, main prayer space, chancel area, and a side chapel from the 14th century with decorative stone window patterns.
The church was founded around the middle of the 12th century and served the community as a place of worship for approximately 700 years. In the late 1800s a newer building was constructed closer to the village, leading to the gradual abandonment of this original site.
This place served as a spiritual center for generations of local families and their devotion is evident in the many burial monuments that remain visible in the grounds. It has also captured the imagination of writers and poets who have referenced it in their work.
The site is located in a rural setting and remains open year-round for people to visit and explore at their own pace. Visitors should move respectfully through the grounds as it is an active burial place with many graves and monuments from different periods.
The side chapel preserves rare medieval stone details such as niches and a large east window with intricate geometric patterns carved into the frame. These carved features have survived remarkably well despite centuries of exposure to weather and neglect.
