Beauvale Priory, Medieval Carthusian monastery ruins in Greasley, England
Beauvale Priory is a medieval Carthusian monastery whose stone walls and gatehouse remain within open countryside near Greasley. The ruins show clear architectural features from the 14th century when it was first built.
The monastery was founded in 1301 and was the third Carthusian house established in England before it closed in 1539. This closure came as part of the religious dissolution that swept across England during the Tudor period.
The ground preserves fragments of decorative tiles and masonry that reveal how the monks arranged their daily spiritual life. These remnants show the care taken in building a place dedicated to prayer and contemplation.
Access to the ruins is open Friday through Sunday from 9.30 AM to 4 PM, and visitors should come prepared for uneven ground and open countryside. A tearoom nearby offers refreshments if you need a break during your visit.
Prior Robert Lawrence was executed in 1535 for refusing to accept King Henry VIII as head of the Church. His defiance and that of his predecessor reveal the heavy price some paid for their religious convictions.
