Allerton Mauleverer Priory, Medieval priory ruins in Allerton Mauleverer, United Kingdom.
Allerton Mauleverer Priory is a Benedictine monastery whose stone remains can still be seen near Gate Hill Farm in North Yorkshire. The ruins were once part of a religious center that was connected to the nearby Church of St. Martin.
Richard Mauleverer founded this Benedictine monastery in 1100, and it came under the Abbey of Marmoutier in Normandy in 1110. After its dissolution during upheaval in England, its revenues were reassigned to other institutions.
The connected Church of St. Martin contains three wooden knight carvings and a brass memorial to Johannes Mauleverer from 1400. These artworks show how the religious community was tied to the local noble families.
The site is located in Allerton Mauleverer within the parish that includes Hopperton in North Yorkshire and can be reached on foot. The surviving foundations and proximity to Church of St. Martin allow visitors to understand the layout of the former complex.
After the monastery's closure, its income was transferred to King's College Cambridge, showing how monastic wealth was redirected to new purposes. This link between this northern site and one of England's major universities often surprises visitors.
