Arnos Vale Cemetery, Victorian cemetery in Brislington, United Kingdom
Arnos Vale Cemetery is a burial ground laid across extensive grounds with Victorian buildings, several chapels, and walking paths throughout. The site features many gravestones and monuments from different periods, showing how burials were arranged across the landscape.
This burial ground was founded in 1837 as one of England's first commercial cemeteries and received its first burial two years later. It came into being during a period when new burial grounds outside cities became necessary.
The cemetery holds the grave of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, an Indian social reformer whose mausoleum stands in traditional Indian architectural style. Visitors can see this monument and learn how it reflects the place's role as a burial ground for people from many backgrounds.
The grounds are open during daylight hours for visitors to explore the pathways and monuments across the site. Comfortable walking shoes are helpful since the terrain is hilly and much of the area is best seen on foot.
The grounds contain more than 500 soldier graves from both world wars, with a dedicated section for First World War veterans. These war graves form an important part of the site's story.
