Batts Combe Quarry

Batts Combe Quarry is a limestone extraction site near Cheddar that supplies raw materials for building projects across the region. The operation uses controlled blasting to break and prepare stone for removal and transport.

The site shows traces from the Bronze Age, indicating a long history of human presence before industrial extraction work began in the early twentieth century. These earlier signs of land use suggest the area had significance long before modern quarrying operations.

The quarry maintains connections with Wells Cathedral School through collaborative wildlife monitoring projects, particularly focusing on dormouse populations in adjacent woodland areas.

The site sits along a busy route and is partly visible from public land when passing by the location. Best to visit during daytime hours to safely observe the operations from nearby areas.

The stone extracted here is used to build Hinkley Point C Power Station, a major infrastructure project for the region. This connection shows how local quarries play a role in large national development projects.
