Cheddar, Rural village in Somerset, England
Cheddar is a village in Somerset, England, that sits at the base of tall limestone cliffs and provides access to the largest gorge in the country. The area reveals numerous caves and underground chambers that extend for several kilometers through the rock.
Archaeological findings in Gough's Cave include a human skeleton from around 9000 years ago, known as Cheddar Man. This discovery represents the oldest complete human skeleton found in the country.
The settlement lends its name to the cheese that has been made here for centuries, and visitors still see caves where the product matures under natural conditions. The aging process in these chambers gives the cheese its characteristic texture and flavor.
The village is accessible via the M5 motorway, and regular bus services run from Bristol, Bath and Weston-super-Mare. Roads in the center are narrow, so walking is advisable once you arrive.
A medieval market cross stands in the center of the settlement and marks the spot where merchants sold local produce from the 15th century onward. This stone monument served for centuries as a meeting point for trade and community life.
