Longwood Swallet, Limestone cave in Mendip Hills, Somerset, England
Longwood Swallet is a limestone cave in the Mendip Hills that runs through approximately 1.6 kilometers of underground passages. The system descends to depths of around 175 meters and displays remarkable layers of Carboniferous rock formations throughout its galleries.
Students from Sidcot School discovered this cave system in September 1944, adding to Somerset's collection of documented underground sites. This discovery helped researchers understand the limestone network that connects different cave systems across the region.
The Charterhouse Caving Company maintains strict access control to protect geological features and ensure responsible exploration of the cave system.
A concrete entrance structure with warning signs indicates the risk of flooding caused by nearby water extraction activities. Visitors should prepare for changing conditions and check current access information before planning a visit to the site.
This cave forms part of the Cheddar Complex Site of Special Scientific Interest and connects to August Hole through underground limestone passages. This geological link makes it an important study site for understanding the region's karst hydrology.
