Ayton Castle, Tower house in Scottish Borders, United Kingdom
Ayton Castle is a tower house in the Scottish Borders built from red sandstone, combining medieval tower architecture with Scottish Baronial design from the 19th century. The estate includes a stable block, a restored 16th-century dovecote, and the South Lodge on the grounds.
The original stronghold belonged to the Home family and was captured by English forces in 1497, later destroyed by fire in 1834. The castle was reconstructed in the 19th century following this loss.
The castle preserves its 1875 interior decorations with stenciled patterns meant to resemble silk damask across the rooms. These details showcase the craftsmanship choices that shaped how people decorated their homes during that period.
Visitors can see the castle and outbuildings only through guided tours that must be arranged in advance. It is best to contact ahead to schedule a convenient time for your visit.
Writer Mark Twain purchased the dining room fireplace mantel during his 1873 visit and brought it back to his home in Connecticut. The mantel is now displayed at the Mark Twain House & Museum there.
