Baltic Quay, Residential complex in Surrey Quays, London Borough of Southwark, England
Baltic Quay is a residential complex between South Dock and Greenland Dock, featuring vaulted roofs, circular windows, and a prominent 14-story tower as key architectural elements. The structure was converted from former office and commercial spaces in 1995 by Barlow Henley Architects.
The London Docklands Development Corporation completed this residential development in 1989 as part of a broader transformation of the old dockyard areas. The completion marked the start of converting abandoned industrial land across the Southwark waterfront.
The building earned the nickname 'Ikea building' from local residents because of its original blue and yellow exterior colors. These colors immediately catch visitors' eyes when arriving at the waterfront.
The complex contains residential apartments spread across multiple floors with good access to the dockland pathways and local facilities along the waterfront. The area is best explored on foot, with plenty of walking routes connecting different sections of the docks.
The building undergoes complete external repainting every ten years according to lease requirements, with the first phase starting in April 2008. These regular maintenance cycles keep the distinctive exterior colors fresh and continuously refresh the structure's appearance.
