Beeleigh Abbey, Medieval residence in Maldon, England
The stone structure of Beeleigh Abbey stands near the River Chelmer, featuring preserved elements of early medieval architecture including vaulted rooms and ornate piers.
Founded in 1180 for the Premonstratensian order, Beeleigh Abbey received a royal charter from Richard I in 1189 through the efforts of Robert de Mantell.
The heart of Roger Niger, a 13th-century Bishop of London, rests within the abbey walls, making it a destination for medieval pilgrims including King Edward I.
The property includes three acres of gardens with gravel paths, Mediterranean plantings, and an extensive formal rose garden containing over 300 varieties of English roses.
After serving as a monastery, public house, and private residence, Beeleigh Abbey received substantial restoration work in 1912 under Captain F. W. Grantham.
