Barr Castle, Medieval castle in Lochwinnoch, Scotland.
Barr Castle is a tower house ruin in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, Scotland, built from squared stone and rising four storeys with a rectangular plan. It stands on a low ridge just south of the village, and the outer walls remain largely intact, giving a clear sense of the original scale.
The Glen family built the tower in the early 1500s, and after Alexander Glen died in 1629 the property passed to the Hamiltons of Ferguslie. They enlarged the building during the 1600s, turning it into a more substantial residence.
The castle served as a focal point for the surrounding communities and the families who occupied it. Walking around the remains today, you can see traces of how life unfolded within these walls across different periods.
The ruin is freely accessible from the outside and sits on a ridge within easy walking distance south of Lochwinnoch. The interior cannot be entered, but a walk around the outside walls is enough to take in the full shape of the building.
A carved pediment above the entrance still bears family initials that have remained readable over the centuries. This detail dates from the Hamilton period and is one of the few personal marks still visible on the structure.
