Barr Castle, Medieval castle in Lochwinnoch, Scotland.
Barr Castle is a tower house ruin in Lochwinnoch that rises four storeys with a rectangular footprint built from squared masonry. The structure displays reinforced stone corners and sits on a low ridge south of the village where visitors can observe the exterior stonework and layout.
The castle was built in the early 1500s by the Glen family and passed to the Hamiltons of Ferguslie after Alexander Glen's death in 1629. During the 1600s the building was expanded and converted into a larger residence to serve new needs.
The castle served as a focal point for the surrounding communities and the families who occupied it. Walking around the remains today, you can see traces of how life unfolded within these walls across different periods.
The ruins sit on a low ridge south of Lochwinnoch village where exterior views are readily available to visitors. Interior access is not permitted due to preservation concerns, but walking around the outside allows you to examine the stonework and understand the building's structure.
A carved pediment above the entrance preserves family initials that have survived the centuries at this location. This carved marker offers a direct connection to the individuals who once claimed this place as their own.
