Billingham Manor, Grade II* listed manor house in Shorwell, England

Billingham Manor is an English country house featuring traditional architectural details from the 1600s, with a notable oak staircase from the Queen Anne period and intricately paneled rooms. The interior preserves period-specific craftsmanship throughout its spaces.

The manor was built in 1631 and underwent major renovations around a century later directed by Edward Worsley, son of the influential Sir Edward Worsley of Gatcombe House. These modifications shaped much of its present appearance.

The novelist J.B. Priestley lived here as the owner, and author Olivia Manning's remains were laid to rest on the grounds after her cremation. These literary connections remain part of the house's story today.

The property is subject to strict preservation rules that protect its architectural elements and interior details. Visitors should expect that access may be limited to specific areas while conservation remains the priority.

A hidden underground passage connects the northern and southern ends of the house, adding an element of mystery to its architectural layout. This concealed feature often goes unnoticed by visitors despite shaping the building's unusual design in subtle ways.
