St. Olave's Church, Gatcombe

St. Olave's Church, Gatcombe, 13th-century parish church in Gatcombe, England

St. Olave's Church is a stone building featuring a tower with three large bells and ornamental carvings beneath the roof edge and around the south entrance. The structure displays typical medieval craftsmanship that visitors can observe throughout its exterior design.

The church was built in 1292 as a private chapel for the Estur family of Gatcombe House before being enlarged with a tower during the 15th century. This expansion shows how the building grew from a family chapel into a larger parish church over time.

The interior showcases stained glass windows created by renowned artists including William Morris and Dante Gabriel Rossetti during the 1860s. These works reflect how the church became connected to the artistic movements of the Victorian era and remain central to its visual identity today.

The church is open during daylight hours and holds regular Sunday services that visitors are welcome to attend. Plan your visit outside these service times if you prefer to explore without interruption and check ahead for specific visiting arrangements.

A wooden military effigy from the 14th century lies in a chancel recess with an angel carved at its head and a lion at its feet. This rare tomb figure often goes unnoticed by visitors walking through the nave and represents a remarkable piece of medieval carving.
