Bostall Heath and Woods, Nature reserve in Abbey Wood, England
Bostall Heath and Woods is a nature reserve in Abbey Wood combining woodland and heathland in a single site. The landscape features oak, birch, and pine trees that create different habitats for local animals and plants.
Bostall Woods was acquired by London County Council for public use in 1891 and opened to visitors in 1893. The Cooperative Woods section came under community hospice stewardship in 1988 through a donation.
The Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society, established in 1872 for arsenal workers, gifted the Cooperative Woods section to Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice in 1988.
Multiple entrances provide access to the reserve, and it is served by Abbey Wood railway station and several bus routes. Visitors should bring sturdy shoes for woodland paths and be prepared for muddy sections during wet weather.
The reserve contains dedicated spaces for bowls and cricket alongside natural heathland with gorse shrubs. This blend of recreational facilities within a working nature reserve is uncommon in urban settings.
