Bryn Bras Castle, Grade II* listed castle in Llanrug, Wales
Bryn Bras Castle is a fortress with Neo-Romanesque architecture located in the Welsh Mountains of Snowdonia, featuring round-arched openings, chevron patterns, and cable designs across its stone facade. The estate spans 32 acres and combines manicured gardens, woodlands, and mountainous terrain around the main structure.
The castle was designed by architect Thomas Hopper between 1829 and 1835 for attorney Thomas Williams and incorporates Norman Revival style throughout. This building project represented a significant investment in the region during the early 19th century.
Gladiator statues and a figure of the god Pan sit within a pool near the knot garden, creating focal points throughout the grounds. These decorative elements reflect the owner's artistic vision and give the landscape a theatrical quality.
The castle operates as a holiday residence with self-catering apartments available on the estate. Access may vary depending on booking status, so checking in advance is recommended before planning a visit.
The property later served as a stud farm under Captain Frank Stewart Barnard, who held the position of High Sheriff of Caernarvonshire from 1903 to 1904. This chapter in its history left a lasting impact on how the grounds were organized and developed.
