Founded in 1401, the building initially served as part of St John's Hospital before becoming a chantry chapel and later housing the Royal Latin School until 1907.

The National Trust maintains the chapel as a second-hand bookshop, offering visitors access to both historical architecture and literary materials throughout the week.
The chapel remains the oldest building in Buckingham, having survived the great fire of 1725 that destroyed many other structures in the town.
