Camp Down, Portsdown Hill, Military communication station on Portsdown Hill, United Kingdom.
Camp Down is a military site on Portsdown Hill containing remains of an Admiralty semaphore station and a defensive redoubt. These structures formed part of a fortification line that protected Portsmouth Harbor and its shipyard.
The Admiralty Telegraph Station was built in 1821 and operated a semaphore line between London and Portsmouth from 1822 to 1847. After this communication system ceased operation, a defensive redoubt was added to counter emerging threats from advancing weapon technology.
The site served as a communication link for British naval officials using visual signal systems. The semaphore station connected distant military centers and helped coordinate harbor defense operations.
The site sits on an open hilltop offering views of the surrounding landscape. A visit works best in good weather since the location is exposed with little shelter available.
Portions of the original site were altered by quarrying activities, making some features less visible than they once were. Despite this, the surviving structures offer a window into the military engineering techniques of the era.
