Bronwydd Castle, Country house ruins in Troedyraur, United Kingdom
Bronwydd Castle is a country house in ruins perched on a bluff above the Afon Cynllo river, displaying round towers and square towers with distinctive bell-turret features. The remains reveal Victorian Gothic forms and structural elements that still stand today.
The original structure dates from the 18th century but underwent major rebuilding in the 19th century. Sir Thomas Lloyd transformed it in the 1850s into a Victorian Gothic estate influenced by Irish architectural designs.
The chapel served as a private space for Methodist worship, revealing the religious beliefs of the Lloyd family. The baronial hall displayed family records and documents that told the story of the household and its residents.
The house is in a deteriorating state and requires caution when exploring the site. Visitors should stay away from crumbling walls and prioritize their safety throughout the visit.
The estate featured mock half-timber stables and service buildings that mirrored architectural patterns common in Chester. This unexpected copying of regional styles was a rare feature for a Welsh country property of that era.
