Brook Street Chapel

Brook Street Chapel is a two-storey church building constructed from red brick with a slate roof and two external staircases serving the upper levels. The interior features three galleries, wooden pews dating to 1859, and a late 17th-century pulpit along the back wall.

This chapel was founded after the Toleration Act of 1688, providing a place where Unitarians could worship freely as religious restrictions loosened. The building has been modified over time to meet the changing needs of its congregation.

The chapel shows how believers gathered for worship in a space designed for different groups, with its gallery layout reflecting the social customs of its time. The wooden pews and pulpit placement reveal the way people participated in religious services.

Access to the chapel is from Brook Street in Knutsford, allowing visitors to see both the building and its surrounding memorial grounds. The two external staircases make it easy to explore the different levels of the structure.

The chapel grounds contain the burial sites of novelist Mrs. Gaskell, her husband William, and their two unmarried daughters in its memorial areas. This family connection reflects the deep ties between the Gaskells and this religious community.
