Tottenham High Cross, Grade II listed monument in North London, England
Tottenham High Cross is an octagonal brick structure built in four tiers that rises from Tottenham High Road. The monument features Gothic-style ornamental details and stands at an elevated position on the historic street.
Builder Dean Owen Wood constructed the brick version between 1600 and 1609 on this spot. It replaced an earlier wooden cross that had marked the location since 1409.
The monument was paid for by residents who wanted to preserve their village heritage. It served as a gathering spot and helped people feel connected to their hometown.
The monument sits directly on Tottenham High Road and is easy to spot due to its height. The location is accessible and there is open space around it for viewing from different angles.
The cross stands on a natural hilltop along an ancient Roman road. It marks the spot where the original village settlement was centered before the area expanded into a modern town.
