Burns Cottage, Birth house museum in Alloway, Scotland
Burns Cottage is a four-room clay and thatch cottage in Alloway, Scotland, where Robert Burns was born in 1759. The house displays the family's living spaces and sleeping areas, now arranged as a museum for visitors to explore.
William Burnes built this cottage in 1757 as his family home. During the 19th century it was briefly converted into an alehouse, but restoration in 1881 returned it to its original form.
The walls display traditional Scottish words and poetry passages that shaped Burns's writing style. These expressions came from his family's everyday speech and later appeared throughout his literary work.
The site is accessible to people with disabilities and parking is available on the grounds. Combined tickets for the entire Robert Burns Birthplace Museum complex can be purchased.
The kitchen features an audio presentation of Tam o'Shanter, one of Burns's most famous poems, performed in the room where he spent his childhood. This connects the poem directly to the place where it was inspired.
