Brown Knowl Methodist Church, Grade II listed church in Broxton, Cheshire, UK
Brown Knowl Methodist Church is a Gothic Revival building in Broxton constructed from red-brown brick with stone details and a grey slate roof. The structure features a distinctive corner tower with crenellated top, a large five-light window on the front facade, and an adjoining Sunday school building that forms an L-shape with the main chapel.
An earlier chapel called Ebenezer stood on this site from 1836, serving the Methodist community that had gathered here since 1822. The current building was constructed in 1913 to replace it with a larger and more substantial structure for the expanding congregation.
The church reflects the importance of Methodist faith in the local community and continues to serve as a gathering place beyond worship. Small meetings and quiet days held here show how the building remains woven into daily community life.
The church is located on Sherringtons Lane in the quiet Brown Knowl area near Broxton and is accessible on foot. Visitors should check in advance about opening times, as it is primarily used for Sunday services and special events.
The churchyard contains a tomb dating to around 1869 belonging to John Wedgwood and his wife, a local preacher who supported Primitive Methodism in the area. Wedgwood was a distant relative of the renowned potter Josiah Wedgwood, and his tomb itself holds Grade II listed status for its historical importance.
