Caerleon Endowed School, Grade II* listed educational building in Caerleon, Wales.
Caerleon Endowed School is a Grade II* listed school building with a half H-shaped layout featuring separate wings for the schoolmaster and schoolmistress residences. The structure on High Street continues to function as part of a modern school today.
Charles Williams founded this school in 1724 through a bequest, initially educating thirty boys and twenty girls from lower-income families. The institution remained independent until 1948, when it became part of the state education system.
The school shows how Welsh communities valued education across social classes, marking a shift in local society. The building became a symbol of this progress as it served those seeking to improve their lives.
The building sits centrally on Caerleon High Street and is easy to reach on foot. Visitors can admire the exterior architecture from the public right of way, as the building remains in active school use today.
Only nine headmasters managed the school from its founding through 1948, showing remarkable continuity across more than two centuries. These long tenures point to deep stability and strong ties to the local community.
