Carmel National Nature Reserve, National nature reserve near Llandeilo, Wales, Great Britain.
Carmel National Nature Reserve is a protected woodland area near Llandeilo in Wales covering roughly 50 hectares. The landscape mixes forest sections with hay meadows, limestone cliffs, and open grasslands that create varied habitats for wildlife.
The area was shaped by limestone quarrying that peaked in the 1800s, leaving behind two large quarries and several lime kilns scattered across the land. These industrial remains are still visible within the reserve today.
The management of the reserve involves collaboration between the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales and Natural Resources Wales for conservation purposes.
The reserve has five entry points with a car park and signs leading to main facilities. Wear sturdy footwear and come prepared for changing weather, especially during the wetter months.
The reserve is home to Britain's only turlough, a seasonal lake that fills with groundwater in autumn and winter. It dries up completely during summer, making this a hydrologically rare sight.
