Castell Gwallter, Medieval castle ruins in Geneu'r Glyn, Wales.
Castell Gwallter is a medieval motte-and-bailey site with a circular mound and a U-shaped ditch encircling it. The structure consists of the earthen mound with a flat top and surrounding defensive ditches characteristic of Norman fortifications.
Built around 1110 by Anglo-Normans, the site served as the administrative center for the lordship of Geneu'r-glyn. The fortification was destroyed in 1135, leaving behind the earthworks visible today.
The site shows Norman military design with a motte-and-bailey layout common in medieval Wales. Visitors can observe how the fortification used raised ground to command the surrounding landscape.
Access requires permission from the landowners since the site sits on private property near St Michael's Church. Visitors should contact the owners in advance to arrange a visit.
The mound features a counterscarp bank that emphasizes the interior structure of the fortification. This detail helps visitors understand the construction methods and defensive purpose of the Norman site.
