Castle Archdale

Castle Archdale, Historical estate in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.

Castle Archdale is an estate on the shores of Lough Erne Lower in County Fermanagh, featuring forest trails, castle ruins, and a marina on its grounds. The property spans a large area with water access and diverse recreational facilities.

The estate was founded in 1615 when John Archdale built a T-shaped castle with defensive walls. The structure suffered damage during the Irish Rebellion of 1641 and later underwent further transformations.

The estate served as an RAF base during World War II, where hundreds of military personnel operated flying boats and shaped the area's identity. Today, visitors encounter traces of this military chapter throughout the grounds.

The grounds are easy to explore on foot, with marked paths through forests and along the lake shore. The marina provides docking facilities, and boat trips to nearby islands are available from there.

Aircraft based here played a role in locating a German warship in 1941. This military operation is a significant part of World War II aviation history.
