Portora Castle

Portora Castle sits on a strategic hilltop overlooking where the River Erne widens into Lower Lough Erne, just north of Enniskillen town. The ruins feature a central tower and several round flanking towers built from limestone that create a distinctive profile above the water and surrounding landscape.

Sir William Cole built this fortress in the early 1600s as part of defensive structures protecting Lough Erne shores during the Ulster Plantation era. The construction represented an effort to establish English control over this contested region of Ireland.

The castle displays typical features of Northern Irish military design through its round flanking towers and limestone walls. These elements reflect how people built strong defenses during the medieval period in this area.

The castle can be freely visited year-round from Lough Shore Road in the Portora area of Enniskillen with no entrance restrictions. Be prepared for uneven ground and sloping terrain as you explore the ruins and tower structures.

Students from Portora Royal School accidentally damaged the castle in 1859 during a gunpowder experiment that went wrong. This mishap actually shaped how the ruins look today and remains an odd chapter in the site's past.
