Castle Camps, Medieval fortress in Castle Camps, England
The Norman castle features substantial earthworks with a four-storey brick tower that remained standing until strong winds destroyed it in 1779.
Originally a Saxon manor owned by Wulfwin, the estate was given to Aubrey de Vere I by William the Conqueror after the Norman invasion.
The castle maintained its position as the largest fortress in Cambridgeshire during the twelfth century, demonstrating significant military architecture.
Current remains include sections of rubble visible in the yard south of Castle Farm, which was constructed using materials from the original manor house.
Between 1941 and 1945, the castle grounds transformed into an airfield, marking a shift from medieval defense to modern military purposes.
