Century Mill was a cotton spinning factory in Farnworth, equipped with large machinery and spindles for producing thread from raw cotton. The building later housed different businesses before demolition began in 2023.
The Lancashire Cotton Corporation acquired the mill in 1929 during a downturn in the cotton industry and managed it as part of a large network of factories. It was a typical example of industrial consolidation in textile manufacturing at that time.
Catherine Walton began working at Century Mill at age 12 in 1917, representing the common practice of child labor in industrial manufacturing during that period.
The site is easy to reach and located in a densely populated area with good transport links. Visiting is free since the grounds are accessible to the public, though it is worth noting that the construction site limits certain areas.
The factory was powered by a large engine built by a renowned engineering company to drive the spinning equipment. This motor represented the technical sophistication available to mills in the early 1900s.
