Caverswall Castle, Medieval quadrangular castle in Caverswall, England
Caverswall Castle is a medieval fortified residence with three stories featuring stone mullioned windows, enclosed by a preserved moat and defensive curtain walls. The structure retains its original external walls while the interior has been adapted for modern living.
The fortification was built in the 1200s as a defensive stronghold and was later transformed in the 1600s into a residential mansion by a wealthy wool merchant who served as mayor. This conversion shaped how the building looks today.
The property became home to religious communities in the 1800s, serving as a convent and later housing sisters from different orders who left their mark on the place.
The location is in the countryside and is best reached by car, as public transport options are limited in the area. It is wise to check visiting conditions in advance since the building is a protected historic monument.
Few moated fortifications in England maintain both their original medieval external walls and modern interior comforts at the same time. This rare combination makes the castle a notable example of how historic structures were adapted to meet contemporary needs.
