Christ Church, Anglican church in Lancaster, England
Christ Church is an Anglican church on Wyresdale Road featuring Gothic Revival architecture with pointed arches, geometric tracery windows, and detailed sandstone construction. Inside you will find a Derbyshire stone war memorial, a marble reredos from 1916, and a sandstone font from 1914.
Construction began in 1855 and the building was completed in 1889, originally designed to serve Lancaster Grammar School and the local workhouse. The project marked an important expansion of religious facilities during this period of growth.
The church serves as a center for Anglican worship and community gatherings where you can experience how faith shapes local life. Its spaces reflect the presence and practices of those who gather here regularly.
The building is open to visitors during regular hours, allowing you to view its architectural features and interior furnishings at leisure. It is worth checking ahead to confirm opening times, as services and private events may affect access.
Samuel Gregson, a local industrialist and Member of Parliament, provided substantial funding for the church's establishment and growth. His contribution was key to realizing one of Lancaster's more impressive Gothic structures.
