Christ Church Shelton and Oxon, church in Oxon, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, UK
Christ Church Shelton and Oxon is a church built in 1854 in Shrewsbury following Early English architectural style with pointed lancet windows. Inside, the space features scissor-braced roof timbers, an ornate reredos behind the altar, an octagonal baptismal font, and stained glass windows from different periods.
The church was built in 1854 on the Windmill Field to serve a growing population affected by flooding from the nearby River Severn. Its interior was expanded between 1886 and 1904 when the ornate reredos was added, and in 2001 a new window was installed to mark the millennium.
The church serves as a gathering place for worship and community activities throughout the year. Its connection to the local school and neighborhood names reflects how it has been woven into everyday life here.
The building is easy to reach on foot or by car, with parking usually available nearby. Visitors are welcome to explore at their own pace and join services or community events that take place throughout the year.
The building was designed by Edward Haycock Snr, a renowned architect of the period, and its pulpit features a carved pelican design, a rare symbol in Christian decoration. The churchyard holds graves of servicemen from World War II, serving as a quiet reminder of local history.
