The Mount, Georgian house in Shrewsbury, England
The Mount is a three-storey red brick building with five bays and a portico supported by Doric columns in Shrewsbury, England. Sash windows run across all floors, and a thick stone cornice crowns the roofline.
Doctor Robert Darwin commissioned the house in 1800, and his son Charles Darwin was born here in 1809. The family occupied the property until the mid-19th century, after which it passed to other owners.
Georgian style favoured restraint and order, so the facade relies on proportion rather than decoration to create its sense of authority. The house reflects how prosperous English families at the turn of the 19th century expressed status through symmetry and balance rather than ornament.
The building now serves as offices for government valuation services, so the interior is not open to the public. Visits can be arranged by appointment during working hours.
A local group proposed in 2018 to convert the house into a public facility dedicated to Charles Darwin's work. The project remains under discussion but has not yet been realized.
