Church of Saint Leonard, Bengeo, Norman church in Bengeo, England
The Church of Saint Leonard is a Norman stone building with a tiled roof that sits on a hilltop overlooking the surrounding landscape. From this elevated position, it commands views across the Beane and Lea valleys.
This structure originated around 1120 and served as Bengeo's main parish church for centuries. The opening of Holy Trinity Church in 1855 changed its status in the community.
Medieval wall paintings adorn the interior, discovered during 1938 restoration work and showing how worshippers once decorated their sacred space. These artworks reveal the artistic practices that people valued in earlier centuries.
The building opens regularly during summer months and has nearby parking available for visitors. The hilltop location is accessible and offers a pleasant walk to reach the entrance.
The building features a medieval apse, a rare architectural element that few churches in the region possess. Only one other church in Hertfordshire shares this particular design characteristic.
