Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Newark-on-Trent, Gothic parish church in Newark-on-Trent, England
Church of St. Mary Magdalene is the tallest building in Newark-on-Trent, distinguished by its early Gothic west tower and soaring interior spaces. The structure features high vaulted ceilings, stone archways, and decorative masonry characteristic of medieval parish churches.
Construction began in 1180 with an underground crypt that survives to the present day. After the Black Death period, major rebuilding introduced Perpendicular architectural features that shaped the building's appearance for centuries to follow.
The name honors Mary Magdalene, a figure revered in Christian tradition. Today the building remains a gathering place where locals come together for worship and community occasions throughout the year.
The church is centrally located in Newark and easily reached on foot from the town center. Access is straightforward with a welcoming main entrance, and the interior provides ample space for visitors to walk through and experience the building.
The building contains a rare Dance of Death wall panel, a medieval motif symbolizing mortality and the passage of time. Ten large bells were cast by John Taylor & Co in 1842 and their sound continues to mark time in the town.
