Church of St Andrew & St Mary, Pitminster, Medieval church in Pitminster, United Kingdom
The Church of St Andrew & St Mary is a parish church featuring a two-stage west tower topped with an octagonal spire, constructed from local rubble stone combined with ham stone. The building reveals a sturdy blend of these local materials throughout its exterior walls.
Construction began around 1300, replacing an earlier Saxon structure that had stood on the site. The building underwent major expansion in the 15th century, followed later by substantial restoration work in 1869.
The interior displays tomb effigies from several generations of the Colles family, who served as lords of the manor from the 16th to 17th century and left a visible mark on the community.
The church remains an active place of worship with regular services held throughout the year, and visitors are welcome to visit on weekdays. Check opening times beforehand and dress respectfully, as this is a functioning sacred space.
The 15th century baptismal font features intricately carved decorative panels depicting St George, St James, and Christ. These detailed carvings represent skilled craftsmanship from that medieval period.
