Church of St Leonard, Middleton, Medieval parish church in Middleton, England
St Leonard Church is a stone parish church with Norman architectural elements, including an ancient doorway incorporated into the tower arch. The structure combines medieval features with later modifications that reflect its development across centuries.
Bishop Thomas Langley, Chancellor of England, directed the construction of the main church building in 1412 to replace an earlier Saxon structure. This foundation was part of a broader phase of church building across the region during the early 1400s.
The Flodden Window displays names of local archers who fought in the 1513 battle against Scotland. This feature connects the community to a significant moment in English military history.
The church is open to visitors from April through September and holds regular Sunday services in the morning. It is advisable to check exact opening times beforehand, as they can vary seasonally.
The church holds one of northern England's most extensive collections of monumental brasses, including one of a Civil War officer in full military armor. These monuments tell stories of local figures and their standing across different historical periods.
