Clifton College, Independent boarding school in Clifton, Bristol, England.
Clifton College is a secondary boarding school in the city of Bristol, in southwest England. The campus spreads across several city blocks in the Clifton area and includes teaching buildings, sports facilities and residential houses for pupils.
The school was founded in 1862 by John Percival as an educational institution for the growing middle class of Bristol. Several buildings on the site later received Grade II listed status for their Victorian architecture.
The red brick buildings from the 19th century form their own small campus among the Georgian terraces of Clifton. Students still wear traditional uniforms today as they walk across lawns between classrooms and boarding houses.
Most buildings are accessible only to pupils and staff, as the site remains an active school. Visitors can view the exterior of historic buildings from public roads that run along the edge of the grounds.
During World War II, the buildings served as the British headquarters of the US Army under General Omar Bradley. Classrooms were converted into offices and boarding houses accommodated staff officers planning the Normandy landings.
