Clockmakers' Museum, Historical timepiece collection at Science Museum, London, England.
The Clockmakers' Museum is a collection of timepieces in London that displays more than 600 watches, 90 clocks, and about 30 marine chronometers from different periods. The objects span from 1600 onwards and show how this craft evolved through technical innovation.
The museum was founded in 1814 by the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers and was housed at Guildhall for many years before moving to the Science Museum in 2015. This relocation made the collection accessible to a wider audience.
The collection displays works by renowned British craftspeople whose techniques shaped the art of horology across generations. You can observe how their mastery influenced the development of timekeeping and remains respected today.
The museum is located on Level 2 of the Science Museum and is open daily with no entrance charge. You should allow plenty of time to explore the extensive collection at your own pace.
The collection includes the H5, a special marine chronometer by John Harrison from 1770 that revolutionized navigation at sea through precise timekeeping. This instrument is considered a milestone in maritime history.
