Craig House

Craig House is a Neoclassical building with stone walls and multiple wings, set within 52 acres of landscaped parkland overlooking Edinburgh's skyline. The estate has been converted into a residential complex with luxury apartments, duplexes, and townhouses, combining restored historical spaces with new construction.

The original structure dates to 1565 and served as a residence for the Symsounes family before transforming into a psychiatric hospital in the late 1800s. This shift marked the start of its use as a medical facility for many decades.

A memorial to WK Burton is set into the garden wall, honoring his role in Japanese engineering projects and infrastructure work. This tribute shows the international connections that once flowed through this estate.

The estate is now a private residential complex with limited public access since it is privately owned. Visitors should respect the boundaries and can appreciate the exterior of the historic buildings and parkland from the access routes.

The main building was deliberately designed to resemble a country house rather than a medical facility, incorporating French Renaissance architectural elements. This unconventional approach aimed to create a calming environment for patients rather than a clinical setting.
