Cumbernauld House, Category A listed mansion in North Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Cumbernauld House is a country house in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, located within a 19-hectare park containing ancient trees. The grounds offer views toward the Campsie Fells and Ochil Hills.
William Adam designed this house in 1731 for John Fleming, the 6th Earl of Wigtown. It was built on land where a former castle once stood that General Monck besieged in 1651.
The house reflects the style of Scottish country estates built during the 1700s, with a preserved dovecote on the grounds showing how wealthy families organized their properties. The design and layout tell you how the nobility lived and what mattered to them in their daily lives.
The mansion has been fully renovated and now contains luxury apartments accessible through walking paths around the park. Visitors can explore the grounds at their own pace and take in the surrounding views.
Mary Queen of Scots visited the earlier castle on this site and is said to have planted a yew tree. The visit is remembered alongside a tragic incident in the great hall that marked the place's history.
