Crofton Roman Villa, Archaeological site in Orpington, United Kingdom.
Crofton Roman Villa is an archaeological site in Orpington containing ten preserved rooms from the Roman period, including mosaic floors and remains of a hypocaust heating system. The complex was part of a larger agricultural estate that included multiple structures and different functional areas.
The villa served as the center of a farming estate in southeastern Britain between 140 and 400 AD, spanning hundreds of acres with fields and woodland. It demonstrates how the Romans established themselves in this region during their long rule and built a settled way of life.
The remains show how wealthy Roman families lived and managed their estates in southeastern Britain during the occupation. You can still see traces of their daily architecture and way of life in the preserved rooms today.
The site stands next to Orpington railway station, making it easy to reach by public transport. Access may be limited depending on ongoing work, so it is worth checking current conditions before your visit.
This is the only Roman villa in Greater London that remains publicly accessible today. While experts knew of its existence, many visitors are surprised to learn that no other comparable Roman houses have survived in this entire region.
